Harare 2080
2017

Created in 2017 during the Global Africa Lab's Afro Imaginaries workshop at Columbia University's GSAPP, Harare 2080 is a speculative portrait envisioning Zimbabwe's capital city in the future. This life-changing project allowed Simba to imagine the future of the city where he grew up. The portrait presents Harare as a sustainable, agrarian city featuring renewable energy infrastructure and integrated urban farming spaces.

Led by Mario Gooden and Mabel Wilson, the workshop included one week on Columbia’s campus and two weeks in Harare, with co-facilitators including Nontsikelelo Mutiti, Maxwell Mutanda, and others. Years later, the work has gained recognition through publication in Volume 1 of Architectural Guide Sub-Saharan Africa and the accompanying book for the Afrofuturism exhibition at the National Museum of African American History and Culture.
